With the end of life of Camunda 7, many companies were faced with a key question: How can existing process automation continue to be operated in a future-proof manner without massive migration risks?
For ATRUVIA, one of the key IT service providers in the banking sector, this question was particularly critical. Over 900 banks, hundreds of productive processes, and a platform used on a daily basis required a solution that combined stability, continuity, and future viability.
Why Camunda 8 was not an option
ATRUVIA initially evaluated Camunda 8 as a successor solution. However, it quickly became apparent that the new architecture and technology stack would have required considerable migration and adaptation efforts. At the same time, it was not clear whether all the functions of Camunda 7 could be fully covered.
Against this backdrop, ATRUVIA made a conscious decision against Camunda 8 and opted for a lower-risk alternative.
Why CIB seven is the best alternative to Camunda 7
After a comprehensive evaluation, the choice fell on CIB seven. Several factors were decisive:
- Seamless continuity: Existing BPMN models can continue to be used without any adjustments.
- Genuine open source platform: No dependence on proprietary vendors.
- High flexibility: From simple workflows to critical automations.
- Stability and performance: Reliable operation even in highly regulated environments.
CIB seven thus combines technical security with operational efficiency—a crucial factor for productive banking operations.
SRM+: A practical use case
A key area at ATRUVIA is Service Request Management (SRM+). Here, internal teams independently develop, test, and publish their processes, ranging from simple email automations to complex procedures such as server migrations.
SRM+ currently manages around 1,000 process definitions with just as many users. The platform also allows you to integrate your own user task interfaces and interfaces into existing system landscapes.
A migration that exceeded expectations
The migration from Camunda 7 to CIB seven was completed in around 25 person-days—without any critical problems and without interruptions to operations. Existing processes could continue to be used unchanged.
Since going live, the platform has been running stably, efficiently, and without disruption. This is a crucial factor in the banking sector, where failures have a direct impact on customers.
Conclusion: Strategic decision with tangible benefits
With CIB seven, ATRUVIA was able to avoid the complexity of migrating to Camunda 8 while establishing a stable, flexible, and future-proof platform. The project not only addressed the immediate challenge but also laid a resilient foundation for the further development of central banking processes.
