CIB seven at Onebright: Scalable Process Automation

The digital platform from Onebright, which, according to its own statements, is the largest private provider of outpatient mental health care in the United Kingdom processes around 14 million high-level process instances and some 120 million automated decisions. CIB seven serves as the engine for process automation and decision management.

The challenge

Onebright combines clinical expertise with digital technology, supports more than 60,000 people annually, and also offers neurodevelopmental services. However, as the company grew, it became clear that off-the-shelf software could not adequately address the complexity of its business model.

Processes in mental health care must be reliable, transparent, and adaptable. In such a sensitive area of care, the quality of care depends directly on processes that are reliably and transparently interconnected. Onebright’s workflows encompass various stakeholders and referral pathways, appointment scheduling, interactions with clients, and numerous internal operational steps. Generic software solutions did not offer the flexibility required to map these processes in the necessary way.

In 2019, the company therefore decided to develop a custom platform for its business processes. It is based on a microservices architecture with different user interfaces for internal and external assignments, appointment scheduling, and digital interactions with clients.

The Solution

Today, the open-source BPM solution CIB seven serves as the engine and one of the core components of this platform. Onebright uses CIB seven to automate processes and manage decisions, coordinating key operational workflows within its digital ecosystem. The company represents its extensive business logic using processes in Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN) and decisions in Decision Model and Notation (DMN).

A key factor was that Onebright was able to continue using its proven automation model without having to fundamentally redesign the existing architecture. Another key factor was the open, long-term, evolving foundation: Onebright relies on technology that it can continue to operate and expand independently of any single vendor. Instead of rebuilding processes and integrations from scratch, the company is further developing its established BPMN- and DMN-based approach and focusing on the functional improvement of its business processes.

Within the microservices architecture, CIB seven serves as the central workflow engine and coordinates business processes between different services and user interfaces. The environment is designed to handle high process volumes: According to Onebright, it processes approximately 14 million root process instances and about 120 million DMN decisions. These figures demonstrate that the processes are not only automated but also run continuously and are business-critical during normal operations.
